The essentials: turkey, homemade cornbread/sausage dressing, homemade cranberry sauce, lettuce, and mayo (LOTS of mayo - on both slices) on homemade oatmeal bread. We've already run shockingly low on leftover turkey, dressing, and cranberry sauce, though, and all the oatmeal bread is gone. :( Maybe Heather will take pity on me and make more.

Hope y'all had a wonderful holiday!

Glad to know that you and yours had a good "full-filling" Thanksgiving at the beautiful Madrono Ranch. I love stories about meals and stories shared over meals. We had Hart home -- and some good "how to make a pie" counseling calls with Kate, who was feasting away from home with friends in Boulder. Here's to more fulfilling columns from you and Heather! Janis

At least eight Burdicks plus the orphans, so at least a dozen. The main course, as I recall, was a turkey raised by the Burdicks. After the incredible meal, we all gathered in the living room for good old fashioned conversation, with no football on TV or other distractions.

I, too, fear that I did not mind my manners back in the day. But Martin (referred to below as "Marty") prompted me to send a very belated note of thanks to the Burdicks shortly before Thanksgiving in 1997. It began:

Dear Burdick Clan:

Among his many talents, my ex-roomie from Mark Hopkins House, Marty Kohout, has a way with words. I remember reading a paper he had written senior year and thinking, “He said more in a two pages than I could say in twenty.”

Marty has struck again, this time with his line in the Alumni Review that “Thanksgiving dinner chez Burdick is still the standard by which I measure holiday feasts.” I thought that you should know that Marty is not alone. Your generosity, and the sense of belonging and togetherness that infused those occasions, will forever remain goals of mine, and they will always be part of my notion of “blessings.”
