Dearest Martin,
Though our paths have only crossed a time or two since Williams I want you to know that Garry ’79 and I remember the couple, who, like us found love for a lifetime at Williams. My fondest memory is watching you and Heather devour the New York Times crosswords together at warp speed. I can see you both slowly walking together across the campus. I remember your innocent and youthful smiles. Thank you for these warm memories of two who were made for each other. Garry and I feel a strong connection and an even greater loss. Just knowing you were there was enough for us. I hope you find comfort in knowing we are here. Our condolences to you and your family.

Martin,

My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to you, Elizabeth, Tito, and Thea. Heather was one of my earliest friends at Williams, since she was on the other side of Lehman Hall from us. She was a delightful person, who brightened everyone’s lives with her kindness, her smile, and her infectious humor. I cannot imagine the sense of loss you and your family are feeling, but it is quite clear from the tributes of your children that she has profoundly enriched and blessed their lives, and that they are carrying on with her legacy. May God bless and comfort you. We will continue to keep you in our prayers.

Martin:

I just saw the sad, sad news.

Although it has been many years now since I last saw Heather, I fully remember her vibrancy, kindness and simple presence. She was just a lovely person in the fullest possible meaning of the word, and from these remembrances, and your fond reports over the years in the Alumni News, it seems as if she became ever so much more so as your lives blossomed. She has much to be proud of, not least your children who gave these wonderful testaments.

Marty, my heart goes out to you and your family.

Dear Martin, the tremendous and warm gathering of so many of the many people who love Heather and you and your great kids did provide gentle comfort and even joyful inspiration, even in the face of this terrible loss we all feel. I have a friend who refers to the passing as “becoming fully spirit.” I like the notion—my belief—that Heather in full spirit is with us and will be with us. Her spirit did and does glow so bright. We cherish knowing her and knowing you. Much love, Jack

Emmylou’s “Goodbye” is a fitting HELLO to the emerging wisdom of your three kids... wow! We are all so glad to have these texts, each so beautifully rendered at Heather’s service. Her genes are certainly alive and well. Her presence is sorely missed.
Martin,
I just learned of Heather’s passing. The several occasions I had to meet and visit with Heather were all a pleasure. The touching tributes by you and your children are very fitting. Please accept my sincerest condolences.
